The Sierra de las Minas hidden salamander is a special kind of salamander. It's one of seven known species in a group called Cryptotriton. These salamanders belong to a larger family of amphibians called Plethodontidae. What makes them unique is that they don't have lungs! They breathe through their skin and the lining of their mouths.
This particular salamander was officially discovered and named in 2009. It was the newest species added to the Cryptotriton group at that time.
Where Does It Live?
The Sierra de las Minas hidden salamander lives in a special place called the Sierra de las Minas mountains. These mountains are in eastern Guatemala, a country in Central America.
Its natural home is in what we call "cloud forests." Imagine a forest that's often covered in mist and clouds! These forests are usually found high up in mountains, and they are very wet and cool. They are full of unique plants and animals.
Why Is It in Danger?
Sadly, the Sierra de las Minas hidden salamander is an endangered animal. This means there aren't many of them left, and they could disappear forever if we don't protect them.
The biggest threat to these salamanders is something called habitat loss. Their "habitat" is their natural home, the cloud forest. When people cut down trees, build roads, or clear land for farming, they destroy the salamander's home. Without a safe place to live, find food, and reproduce, these amazing creatures struggle to survive.
Protecting cloud forests is super important to help the Sierra de las Minas hidden salamander and many other animals that call these unique places home.
