Signe Marie Stray Ryssdal (born Signe Marie Stray) was a famous Norwegian lawyer and politician. She was born on July 22, 1924, and passed away on May 18, 2019. She was a member of the Liberal Party.

Growing Up and School

Signe Marie Stray Ryssdal was born in Tromøy, a town in Norway. Her parents, Sigrid Stray and Christian Stray, were both lawyers.

She finished high school in 1943. After that, she went to the University of Oslo to study law. She studied there from 1945 to 1948. In the summer of 1948, she also studied at the Peace Palace, which is a famous building for international law.

Her Career as a Lawyer and Politician

Signe Marie Stray Ryssdal started her career as a judge's assistant in different courts. Then, she worked as a secretary and inspector for the national tax office from 1951 to 1956.

Becoming a Top Lawyer

In 1956, she opened her own law office in Oslo. She became a special kind of lawyer called a barrister in 1960. This meant she could argue cases in Norway's highest court, the Supreme Court. She was only the third woman in Norway to achieve this!

Her Time in Politics

Signe Marie Stray Ryssdal was also very active in politics.

  • She was a substitute member of the Norwegian Parliament from 1965 to 1973.
  • She was also a member of the Oslo city council from 1968 to 1972.

In 1972, she stopped working as a lawyer to become the chief officer for social affairs in Oslo. This job involved managing social services for the city. She tried to get elected to Parliament again in 1973 but did not win that time.

Leading a County

Her last big job was as the County Governor of Aust-Agder. She held this important position from 1983 until she retired in 1994. A County Governor is like the main leader of a region.

Signe Marie Stray Ryssdal also held many other important positions:

  • She was the head of the National Insurance Administration from 1968 to 1980. This organization helps people with things like pensions and sick pay.
  • She was on the board of a newspaper called Dagbladet.
  • She was also on the board of a bank called Kreditkassen.
  • She helped lead many public groups and committees. Some of these groups worked on laws and taxes.
  • She was the head of the State Council for the Elderly from 1979 to 1993. This group helped make life better for older people.

Her Family Life

In December 1954, Signe Marie married Rolv Ryssdal. He later became the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, which is the highest judge in the country.

They had three children: Anders Christian Stray Ryssdal, Kristine, and Rolv Erik Ryssdal. Signe Marie Stray Ryssdal lived in Arendal, Norway, where she passed away in 2019 at 94 years old.
