Mauritz Sigvard Marjasin (born November 24, 1929 – died January 24, 2021) was an important Swedish public servant and a leader in workers' unions. He was the head of the Swedish Municipal Workers' Union from 1977 to 1988. Later, he became the governor of Örebro County from 1989 to 1994. Sigvard Marjasin passed away from COVID-19 during the COVID-19 pandemic in Sweden.
Early Life and Work
Sigvard Marjasin went to primary school for seven years. After finishing school, he worked many different jobs. He was a courier, a charcutier (someone who prepares meats), a sailor, and even a chef's assistant in hotels.
He also started working with unions, which are groups that protect workers' rights. He took many courses and eventually earned a special degree. After that, he worked as an administrator for a union's night school.
Union Leadership
Marjasin was very active in the Swedish Municipal Workers' Union for many years, from 1963 to 1988. He started as an ombudsman, which means he helped people with their problems. Then he became an education secretary, helping to teach union members.
From 1978 to 1988, he was the chairman, or leader, of the union. As chairman, he was very active and often spoke in the media and at public events. He was known for speaking his mind and was often interviewed by newspapers. He strongly believed that services like childcare should be run by the government, not private companies.
Governor of Örebro County
From 1989 to 1994, Sigvard Marjasin served as the governor of Örebro County. A governor is like a leader for a specific region or county. During his time as governor, he started an important project. He led the effort to renovate and improve Örebro Castle, a historic building in the county. This renovation happened between 1992 and 1993.
Later Public Service
When he retired in 1994, Marjasin took on another important role. He became the chairman of a new group called the Granskningskommissionen. This group was created to review a big police investigation. He held this position until 1996.
