Silver Burn facts for kids
The Silver Burn is a small river on the Isle of Man. People also call it the Silverburn River. In the Manx language, its name is Awin Rosien. It is about 5 miles (8 kilometers) long. The river starts near a place called South Barrule. It then flows south across the island.
Where the Silver Burn Flows
The Silver Burn starts its journey near South Barrule. It flows past a village called St Mark's. As it gets closer to the sea, it goes under a famous old bridge. This bridge is called Monks' Bridge. It is located near Ballasalla. Finally, the river reaches the sea at Castletown harbour.
Special Places Along the River
Just before Ballasalla, the Silver Burn flows through a beautiful area. This area is known as Silverdale Glen. It is a lovely wooded valley. The Manx National Trust bought this special place in 1966. They help to protect it.
A part of the river, from the A3 road south to the A7 road in Ballasalla, is very important. It is called the Silverdale Conservation Area. This means it is a historic district on the Isle of Man. It includes the Silverdale Glen Cafe, Monks' Bridge, and the old ruins of Rushen Abbey.
Other Connections
Another small river joins the Silver Burn. This river is called the Awin Ruy. It flows into the Silver Burn just north of Ballasalla.
Between Ballasalla and Castletown, you can see the Isle of Man Railway tracks. They run very close to the river. Also, a walking path called the Millennium Way follows the river in this area.
