Discovering Silver Mountain's Riches
In January 1873, something exciting happened on Silver Mountain. Miners discovered a rich deposit of valuable minerals. This discovery is often called a "strike." They found rock, known as ore, that contained a lot of gold and silver.
The ore found at what became the Oro Grande Mine was very valuable. It had about $160 worth of gold and $18 worth of silver in every ton of rock. This was a significant amount of money back then! Because of this important discovery, a special area was set up for mining activities. This area was officially named the Silver Mountain Mining District. It helped organize and manage the mining efforts in the region.
