Simbakubwa kutokaafrika was a huge, extinct mammal that looked a bit like a giant hyena. It belonged to an ancient group of meat-eating animals called Hyaenodonta. Scientists found its fossils in Kenya, Africa, from about 23 million years ago during the early Miocene epoch. It was one of the biggest meat-eating mammals ever discovered!

Discovery of a Giant

The main fossil of Simbakubwa had been kept in the Nairobi National Museum for many years. Two American paleontologists (fossil scientists) became very interested in it. They realized it was a new, huge animal that had been waiting to be discovered.

How Big Was Simbakubwa?

The fossils came from rocks that are 23 million years old. Scientists believe this amazing creature might have weighed as much as 1,500 kilograms (about 3,300 pounds). That's even bigger than a modern polar bear! Its skull was as large as a rhinoceros's, and it had huge, sharp canine teeth.

Life in Ancient Africa

About 23 million years ago, Africa was very different from today. Much of the land, even in areas like modern-day Kenya, was covered in thick forests. There was much less grassland back then.

What Simbakubwa Ate

Because of the dense forests, Simbakubwa probably hunted differently from many modern meat-eaters. Instead of long chases, it likely used stealth. This means it would sneak up quietly and then pounce on its prey.

Simbakubwa's teeth were very special. Unlike modern hyenas, it didn't have strong molars for crushing bones. Instead, it had huge, sharp carnassial teeth. These teeth were perfect for slicing through flesh. Simbakubwa was a pure meat-eater, probably hunting large animals like ancient rhinoceroses and early elephants. It also likely scavenged for food.
