How Did Simmons Gap Get Its Name?

A Look Back: Simmons Gap's History

In the past, when people traveled by horse and wagon, Simmons Gap was a very important route. It was one of the main ways to cross the mountains. Imagine how difficult it must have been to travel before cars and paved roads!

However, over time, a new and better mountain crossing was needed. Leaders decided to build a new road called the Spotswood Trail. This trail is now known as Route 33. Once the Spotswood Trail was built, it became the main way to cross the mountains. This meant Simmons Gap was no longer as busy or important for travelers.
