Simo Veli Atte Salminen (born November 8, 1932 – died September 2, 2015) was a Finnish actor known for his funny roles. He often appeared in movies and TV shows made by Spede Pasanen. Simo Salminen usually played a helpful friend or "sidekick" to Spede's characters.
Simo Salminen, along with Vesa-Matti Loiri and Spede Pasanen himself, were key actors in almost all of Spede's projects. Simo often played a supporting role, or at least an important secondary character. He was often the clumsy assistant to the main character, who was usually played by Spede.
His characters were often named "Simo," like in the films Pähkähullu Suomi and Koeputkiaikuinen ja Simon enkelit. Simo Salminen is best remembered for playing Sörselssön. Sörselssön was a mechanic who often had bad luck. He worked with Härski Hartikainen (played by Spede Pasanen) in the Uuno Turhapuro movie series.
Jukka Virtanen, who directed Millipilleri and Noin 7 Veljestä, said that Simo Salminen was naturally funny. He added that Simo was great at making Spede look good on screen without trying to be the main star.
Simo Salminen's Other Work
Before becoming a regular actor for Spede Pasanen, Simo Salminen was a champion in a fun event called "Clown Water-jump" in Finland. He first trained to be a pastry chef. He worked as a pastry chef for 20 years, from 1947 to 1967. After that, he decided to work full-time in the entertainment world.
Simo Salminen also ran his own restaurant for a short time in the early 1970s. Later, Spede Pasanen helped Simo with some money problems from the restaurant. Simo was also a part-owner of a company called Nasse-Setä OY. This company sold items related to Spede Pasanen's shows. This business was the most successful of Simo's projects outside of acting.
Simo Salminen also designed the first award statue for the Venla Awards. This award is given for achievements in Finnish television. The design of the award was changed in 2003.
In the early 1990s, Finland faced a tough economic time. This caused financial problems for Simo's company, Lasilandia. These money troubles continued to affect him later in his life. Even though he received an "actor's pension" (money for actors who retire), it was used to pay off old debts from the Lasilandia company.
Simo Salminen's Life Outside of Work
In his later years, Simo Salminen had some money difficulties. In 2005, his apartment in Espoo caught fire. The fire started from a candle. After the fire, Simo moved to a special home where he could get help. The TV channel MTV3 paid for his first three years there.
Later, Simo moved to a less expensive home in Salo. He lived there until he passed away. Simo Salminen died in 2015 after being sick for a long time.
