Title | Prior of St Andrews, Prior of Loch Leven |
Simon was an important church leader in Scotland a long, long time ago, in the 1200s. He was an Augustinian canon, which means he was a type of priest who followed the rules of Saint Augustine. We don't know his exact birth year, but he passed away sometime between 1225 and 1235.
Simon's Life and Role
Simon started his career at a big church called St Andrews Cathedral Priory. He became the leader, or "prior," of St Andrews around 1211 or 1212.
Moving to Loch Leven
A historian named Walter Bower wrote that Simon had some disagreements with the other priests at St Andrews. Because of this, Simon decided to step down from his role as prior. After leaving St Andrews, Simon became the prior of another church. This church was located on an island called St Serf's Inch in Loch Leven. This change likely happened around the year 1225.
St Serf's Inch Priory
St Serf's Inch Priory was a smaller church located on an island. It was connected to the bigger St Andrews Cathedral Priory. Simon became its leader, helping to guide the church there.
When Did Simon Pass Away?
It's not clear exactly how long Simon lived after moving to Loch Leven. However, the next prior of Loch Leven is first mentioned in records from 1235. This suggests that Simon likely passed away before that year. Walter Bower, the historian, described Simon as a "man of honourable life and praiseworthy behaviour." This means Simon was seen as a good and respected person.
