Simon Kimbangu (born September 12, 1887 – died October 12, 1951) was an important religious leader from the Congo. He started a Christian faith movement called Kimbanguism. People who follow Kimbanguism believe he was a special messenger, like the Holy Spirit.

Simon Kimbangu's Life Story

Simon Kimbangu was born in a place called Nkamba in 1887. His father was a traditional religious leader. In 1915, Simon became a Baptist and worked as a teacher of Christian beliefs for several years.

Starting His Ministry

In early 1921, Simon Kimbangu began his own special work. His followers say he could heal sick people and even bring people back to life. They also believed he could see the future and knew that black people would one day be free. Many people came to hear him preach and see his miracles. His work of preaching and healing lasted from April to September 1921. He quickly gathered a very large group of followers.

Facing Challenges

The large number of people following Kimbangu made the Belgian authorities worried. These were the people who ruled Congo at the time. Some religious leaders also became concerned. On June 6, 1921, Kimbangu and some of his followers were arrested. But Kimbangu managed to escape into the bush with his son, Charles, and other disciples.

Imprisonment and Legacy

Simon Kimbangu continued his work while in hiding. However, in September, he gave himself up. He was put on trial by a military court. He was found guilty of causing trouble and sentenced to death. But the king, King Albert, changed his sentence to life in prison. Kimbangu was moved to a prison in Elisabethville. He stayed there for 30 years until he died on October 12, 1951.

Even while in prison, many people still saw him as a spiritual leader. Some even claimed he could appear in many places at once. He continued to guide his followers and family. Simon Kimbangu became a symbol of hope and freedom for the Congolese people.

The Kimbanguist Church Today

After Simon Kimbangu's trial, the government tried to stop his movement. Followers were sent to different parts of the country, and their faith was made illegal. Many were forced to work in camps, and some died. However, because of this hardship, the Church actually grew stronger. It spread secretly to many new areas. Finally, in 1959, the Kimbanguist Church was officially recognized by the Belgian government. This meant its members could practice their faith freely.

Today, the Kimbanguist Church is well-known in many countries. After Simon Kimbangu died, his son Joseph Diangienda took over the Church's leadership. Joseph Diangienda (born March 22, 1918) helped organize the Church into what it is today. He passed away on July 8, 1992, in Switzerland. His older brother, Salomon Dialungana Kiangani, then became the leader. Now, Salomon's son, Simon Kimbangu Kiangani, is the spiritual leader. The Church's main center is in Nkamba, where Simon Kimbangu was born.
