Simon Luttrell, 1st Earl of Carhampton (born around 1713 – died 14 January 1787) was an important figure in British and Irish politics. He was a peer (a noble person) and a politician. He served in the British Parliament from 1754 to 1780.

Simon Luttrell's Early Life
Simon Luttrell was born around 1713. He was the second son of Henry Luttrell and Elizabeth Jones. His family owned a large estate called Luttrellstown in County Dublin, Ireland. The Luttrell family had owned this land since about 1210.
Simon's father, Henry Luttrell, was a military leader. He fought in the Irish Army during the late 1600s. Sadly, his father was attacked and killed in Dublin in 1717.
Simon Luttrell's Political Career
Simon Luttrell became a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is a person elected to represent a group of people in the House of Commons. This is where laws are made. He served in the British House of Commons for many years.
He represented four different areas:
- Mitchell (from 1755 to 1761)
- Wigan (from 1761 to 1768)
- Weobley (from 1768 to 1774)
- Stockbridge (from 1774 to 1780)
His Noble Titles
On 13 October 1768, Simon Luttrell was given a special title. He became Baron Irnham of Luttrellstown. This was an Irish peerage, which meant he could still be an MP in the British Parliament.
Later, he received even higher titles:
- On 9 January 1781, he became Viscount Carhampton.
- On 23 June 1785, he was made Earl of Carhampton.
He lived at Four Oaks Hall in Sutton Coldfield, England, for many years.
Simon Luttrell's Family Life
On 22 January 1735, Simon Luttrell married Judith Maria Lawes. Judith was the daughter of Sir Nicholas Lawes, who was the Governor of Jamaica.
Simon and Judith had eight children together:
- Henry Lawes Luttrell, 2nd Earl of Carhampton (1743–1821)
- John Luttrell-Olmius, 3rd Earl of Carhampton (born around 1745 – died 1829)
- Temple Simon Luttrell (born around 1738 – died 1803)
- James Luttrell (born around 1751 – died 1788), who was a naval officer.
- Thomas Luttrell (died 1766)
- Anne Luttrell (1743 – 1808). She married Prince Henry, Duke of Cumberland and Strathearn. He was the brother of King George III of the United Kingdom. This marriage led to a new law called the Royal Marriages Act 1772.
- Elizabeth Luttrell (1744-1799)
- Lucy Luttrell
Judith inherited land and businesses from her father. These properties later came under Simon Luttrell's control. After his death, they were passed on to his son.
