What's Inside Simon Snootle?
This book is filled with short stories that are both funny and a little bit quirky. Even though some parts might seem a bit "dark," the main ideas are about being yourself and not worrying too much about what others think. The stories remind us to enjoy life and not take everything too seriously.
Meet the Characters
- Simon Snootle: He falls into his parents' well with the neighborhood cats. Instead of being sad, he makes the best of it, knowing that more interesting things will probably fall in later.
- Boil: This boy hides inside a school bus cushion. He does this to be more like his pet earwig.
- Peter Puddlestick: His life changes after he finds a dead bird.
- The Callous Shrub: This plant loves to steal hats and hairpieces from people.
- Mr. Slowbug: He is so slow that he accidentally becomes a new fashion trend!
The Art Style
Lorin Morgan-Richards also created all the pictures for the book. His drawings are made with ink and graphite. People often say his art style reminds them of famous artists like Edward Gorey and Tim Burton. His illustrations help bring the strange and wonderful stories to life.
Different Book Versions
Simon Snootle and Other Small Stories has been released in a few different ways over the years.
Early Handmade Editions
In 2009, Lorin Morgan-Richards made the very first copies of the book by hand. These special hardcover books had black faux leather covers. The pages were sewn together with linen. The cover also had a shiny cat logo designed by Richards himself. A second handmade edition was also created. This one had a yellow picture of Simon Snootle in the well with the cats. Both of these early editions were signed and numbered by the author. They are now considered collector's items.
Paperback Release
In 2016, the book was released as a paperback. This version had a new cover that showed many characters from the different stories. You can see Ms. Shellquick, Simon Snootle, and the boy named Boil with his earwig on the cover.
