The Simon Tiffany House is a really old and special house in Salem, Connecticut. It's also sometimes called the Ebenezer Tiffany House. This house was built around 1793. It's a great example of a farmhouse from that time. Because it's so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. This list helps protect important historical places.

About the House and Its History

The Simon Tiffany House is in a quiet, countryside area of southwestern Salem. It's on the south side of Darling Street. The house is made of wood and has one and a half stories. It has a special roof shape called a gambrel roof. This roof has two different slopes on each side. The house also has a chimney right in the middle. Its outside walls are covered with overlapping wooden boards called clapboards.

The front of the house has five windows and a door in the middle. Above the door, there's a small window with four glass panes. Inside, the house has a central chimney plan. This means the chimney is the main feature in the middle of the house. When you walk in, there's a small hallway. A winding staircase goes up to the second floor from here. On each side of the chimney, there are rooms called parlors. These were like living rooms.

Behind the chimney, there's now one big space. This area used to be the kitchen. It might have been two smaller rooms that were later combined. A one-story section extends from one side of the house. This part holds a modern kitchen and dining area. Some of the windows still have their original inside shutters. It's rare to find these old shutters still around today!

Who Lived Here?

Ebenezer Tiffany bought the land for this house in 1786. He bought it from the state government. The state had taken the land from its previous owner. This owner was a Loyalist. Loyalists were people who supported the King of England during the American Revolutionary War. They often left the country when the war ended. Before buying the land, Ebenezer Tiffany had been renting it.

His son, Simon Tiffany, built the house around the 1790s. Ebenezer gave Simon a part of the land to build on. The Tiffany family owned this house for a long time, until 1895. In the 1920s, the house was carefully fixed up and made to look new again.
