Singers Glen is a small, historic community in Rockingham County, Virginia. It is called a Census-designated place (CDP), which means it's an area identified by the U.S. Census Bureau for statistical purposes. Singers Glen is located between Little North Mountain and Interstate 81. This special place is recognized by both the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission and the United States Department of the Interior because of its rich history.

History of Singers Glen

Singers Glen was first settled in 1809. Many of the first settlers were descendants of German Anabaptists. These were people who had faced difficulties for their religious beliefs in Europe.

A very important person in Singers Glen's history was Joseph Funk. He was a well-known music teacher and composer. Thanks to his work, Singers Glen became famous for its music. It is even considered the birthplace of gospel music in the southern United States.

Two important historical sites in Singers Glen are the Joseph Funk House and the Singers Glen Historic District. Both of these places are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are recognized for their historical importance.

Education in the Community

The Singers Glen School served the community for many years. It was open from 1882 until 1973.
