Single wicket cricket facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Single wicket cricket is a special kind of cricket game. It's usually played between just two people: one player who bats (the batter) and one who bowls (the bowler). It's a much older and simpler version of cricket compared to the big team games you might know.

What is Single Wicket Cricket?

Single wicket cricket focuses on a one-on-one challenge. It's like a mini-game of cricket where the batter tries to score runs and the bowler tries to get them out. This style of play was very popular a long time ago, even before modern cricket rules were fully set. It's a great way to practice skills or have a quick game with fewer players.

How to Play: The Rules

The biggest difference in single wicket cricket is how runs are scored. In regular cricket, a batter runs between two ends of the pitch to score a run. But in single wicket cricket, the batter has to run much further!

Scoring a Run

To score a single run, the batter must run from their starting spot (called the ground) at one end of the pitch. They run all the way to the bowling crease at the other end. Then, they must run all the way back to their starting ground. This long run is how they score just one run.

Distance for a Run

Think about how far that is! In regular cricket, a batter runs about 58 feet (17.6 meters) to score a run. But in single wicket cricket, they have to run about 124 feet (37.7 meters) for just one run. This makes scoring much harder and more tiring for the batter. It also means the game can be very exciting as the batter tries to complete their long run.
