The Singleton District Hospital is an important building in Singleton, Australia. It is listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register, which means it's a special place protected for its history and design. The hospital is located at 25 Dangar Road. It was designed by a company called Spain and Cosh and built between 1906 and 1907.

Hospital History

The Singleton District Hospital was the very first permanent hospital in the Singleton area. It was finished in 1907. A kind person named Albert Augustus Dangar donated the land for the hospital. He also gave most of the money needed to build it. Because of his generous gift, the hospital was first named the Dangar Cottage Hospital.

For many years, people in the area had been asking for better health care. Mr. Dangar's gift finally made it possible.

Over time, the hospital grew. By 1954, it was helping about 41 patients every day. In November of that year, it helped 177 patients, which was a record at the time!

The hospital did not have a special section for babies to be born for a long time. Babies were born at another hospital called Fairholme Maternity Hospital. In 1956, the hospital's name changed to the Singleton District Hospital. A new maternity section finally opened at the hospital on August 2, 1961.

In February 2018, the hospital got a big upgrade. A new part, called the West Wing, was added. This expansion cost about $7 million.

Today, the hospital is still on its original site. It offers many important services. These include an emergency department for urgent care, surgery, and care for new mothers. It also has specialists for kidney dialysis and palliative care, which helps people with serious illnesses.

Building Design

The hospital building is quite impressive. It has a large two-storey central part. This main building is designed in a style called Federation Arts and Crafts. This style was popular in Australia in the early 1900s.

On each side of the central building, there are single-storey wings. These wings have verandahs that are supported by brick and timber columns. The main building also has special window bays that stick out, with shingled roofs.

Why It's Special

The Singleton District Hospital is important for a few reasons. Its design shows a great example of a country hospital from the early 1900s. It is built in the Federation Arts and Crafts style, which is a significant part of Australia's architectural history.

It is also historically important as a key building for the local community. It has provided health care to the people of Singleton for over a hundred years.

Because of its special design and history, Singleton District Hospital was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999. This listing helps protect the hospital building for future generations.
