Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Abraham Hume, 1st Baronet (born 1703 – died 10 October 1772) was an important British businessman and a member of Parliament. He lived during a time when Britain was becoming a powerful trading nation.

Who Was Sir Abraham Hume?

Sir Abraham Hume was born in 1703. He was the fourth son of Robert Home, whose family came from a place called Ayton in Berwick, Scotland. He later changed his family name to Hume.

A Successful Businessman

Sir Abraham Hume was a very successful businessman. He was a main owner and manager for groups that built ships. These ships were then rented out to the East India Company. The East India Company was a huge British trading company that brought goods like tea, spices, and textiles from Asia to Britain. This made him quite wealthy.

A Member of Parliament

Sir Abraham Hume also became a Member of Parliament. This means he was elected to be part of the British government, helping to make laws. He represented two different areas:

  • Steyning from 1747 to 1754
  • Tregony from 1761 to 1768

Both Steyning and Tregony were known as "rotten boroughs". This was a term for places that had very few voters but still had the right to elect Members of Parliament. This meant a few people could easily control who got elected.

His Home and Family

In 1765, Sir Abraham Hume inherited a large estate called Wormleybury from his brother, Alexander. His brother had started building a house there in 1734. Sir Abraham decided to rebuild and improve this house, making it his grand home.

On 4 April 1769, he was given the title of a "Baronet." This is a special title given by the King or Queen, making him "Sir Abraham Hume, 1st Baronet."

Sir Abraham Hume and his wife, Hannah, had two sons and one daughter. Hannah was the sixth daughter of another important person, Sir Thomas Frederick. Sir Abraham's eldest son, Sir Abraham Hume, 2nd Baronet, took over his title when he passed away. His daughter, also named Hannah, married a famous wit (someone known for their clever humor) named James Hare.
