Sir Alexander Bannerman, 6th Baronet (born 1741 – died 1813) was an important Scottish doctor and a professor. He taught medicine at the famous University of Aberdeen in Scotland. A Baronet is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family.

Early Life and Family History

Alexander Bannerman was born in Scotland on December 22, 1741. He was the oldest son of Alexander Bannerman, a merchant from Aberdeen, and Margaret Burnett. His mother's family, the Burnetts, owned land in a place called Kirkhill.

For a while, Alexander changed his name to Alexander Burnett in 1777. This was because his mother's family had inherited the Kirkhill lands. Later, he changed his name back to Bannerman.

His family had a long history. His great-grandfather, Sir Alexander Bannerman, was made a Baronet in 1682 by King Charles II. This was to honor his family's loyalty during a difficult time. Alexander became the 6th Baronet in his family.

His Career as a Doctor and Professor

Alexander Bannerman was a highly trained Doctor of Medicine. He used his skills to become a professor of medicine at the University of Aberdeen. This meant he taught students all about how the human body works and how to treat illnesses.

In 1796, Alexander officially became the 6th Baronet Bannerman of Elsick. He took over this title after his cousin, Sir Edward Bannerman, passed away. The Elsick estate, which belonged to the family, had been sold earlier. This happened because some family members were thought to have supported the Jacobite rising of 1745, a rebellion against the king.

On January 25, 1768, Alexander married Mary Gordon. They lived at Kirkhill in Aberdeenshire and had several children:

  • Thomas Bannerman (1768–1813)
  • Sir Alexander Bannerman, 7th Baronet (1769–1840)
  • Maria Bannerman (1771–1826), who married William Keith-Falconer, the 6th Earl of Kintore.
  • James Bannerman (1774–1838), who also became a doctor and professor.
  • Sir Charles Bannerman, 8th Baronet (1782–1851)
  • Edward Bannerman
  • Margaret Bannerman

Sir Alexander Bannerman passed away in Aberdeen on December 29, 1813. He was buried in the churchyard of St. Nicholas in Aberdeen.

His Grandchildren

Through his daughter Maria, Alexander was the grandfather of Anthony Keith-Falconer, 7th Earl of Kintore.

His son Charles had a son named Sir Alexander Bannerman, 9th Baronet (1823–1877). This grandson was a diplomat, which means he worked for his country in other nations. He bought back some of the Elsick estate that had been sold by an earlier Baronet. Since he did not have any sons, the Baronet title later passed to his cousin, Sir George Bannerman, 10th Baronet.
