Charles Kemeys was born on November 23, 1688. He was the only son of Sir Charles Kemeys, 3rd Baronet. His family lived at Cefn Mably. His mother was Mary Wharton.

His father passed away in December 1702. Young Charles then inherited his father's lands. He also became the 4th Baronet. A baronet is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family.

He had guardians who helped look after him. These included his uncle, Thomas Wharton. Two other politicians, Robert Price and Thomas Edwards, were also his guardians.

Charles went to Trinity College, Cambridge in May 1706. But he did not finish his studies there. Instead, he decided to travel around Europe. During his travels, he met the Elector of Hanover. This person later became King George I of Great Britain. They became friends.

Sir Charles's Political Career

Charles Kemeys first tried to become a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1710. He ran for the area of Appleby. But he did not win that election.

From 1712 to 1713, he held an important local job. He was the High Sheriff of Glamorganshire. This role involved keeping law and order in the county.

In the 1713 election, he was elected as an MP. He represented Monmouthshire. He had the support of a powerful noble, the Duke of Beaufort.

Charles Kemeys was known as a strong Jacobite. This means he supported the old royal family, the Stuarts. They had been removed from the throne. This was true even though he was friends with King George I. King George was from a different royal family.

Charles did not run for election in 1715. But he was elected again in 1716. This time, he represented Glamorganshire. He won without anyone running against him. This happened again in the elections of 1722 and 1727.

He decided to stop being an MP in 1734. This was because he was not feeling well.
