Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Edward Hales, 2nd Baronet (born 1626 – died around 1684) was an English politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like today's Parliament, from 1660 to 1681.

Early Life and Family

Edward Hales was born in 1626. His father was Sir John Hales, and his mother was Christian Cromer. His grandfather was also named Sir Edward Hales, 1st Baronet.

When he was 16, Edward went to Magdalen College, Oxford in 1642. He was a strong supporter of the King, known as a Royalist. He even risked his life trying to help King Charles I when the King was imprisoned.

Edward became the 2nd Baronet in his family in September 1654. This happened after his grandfather passed away. A baronet is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family.

Political Career

Edward Hales began his political career in 1660. He was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Maidstone. This happened during a special meeting of Parliament called the Convention Parliament.

The next year, in 1661, he was elected again. This time he represented Queenborough in what was known as the Cavalier Parliament. He continued to serve as an MP for Queenborough, being re-elected in 1679.

Family Life and Passing

Edward Hales married Anne Wootton. She was the youngest daughter of Thomas Wotton, 2nd Baron Wotton.

Edward and Anne had at least one son, also named Edward, who later became the 3rd Baronet. Records also show that they had two other sons, John (born 1647) and Thomas (born 1652).

Sir Edward Hales passed away in France sometime between August 1683 and February 1684.
