Sir Edward Smith, 1st Baronet (born around 1630 – died September 6, 1707) was an important English landowner. He was also a politician who served in the House of Commons in 1653. The House of Commons is a key part of the English government, where laws are made.

Early Life and Education

Edward Smith was the son of Edward Smith from Cressy Hall in Lincolnshire. His mother was Elizabeth Heron. Sadly, his father passed away in 1632 when Edward was very young.

In 1649, Edward joined Lincoln's Inn. This was a famous place in London where people studied to become lawyers. It was like a special school for law students.

Political Career

In 1653, Edward Smith was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is someone elected to represent an area in the government. He represented Leicestershire.

He served in a special group called the Barebones Parliament. This Parliament was a short-lived assembly that helped govern England for a time.

Land and Titles

In 1655, Edward inherited his family's lands at Edmondthorpe. This happened after his grandfather, Sir Roger Smith, passed away.

On August 16, 1660, Edward Smith was given a special title. He became a baronet. A baronet is a hereditary title, meaning it can be passed down in the family. It is a rank below a baron but above a knight.

Later, in 1666, he held an important local position. He was the High Sheriff of Leicestershire. A High Sheriff was responsible for keeping law and order in their county.

Family Life

Sir Edward Smith was married three times. His first wife was Constance Spencer. She was the daughter of Sir William Spencer.

His second wife was Frances Lady Weston. They married in 1682. Frances was the widow of Sir Richard Weston.

His third wife was Bridget Baylis. She was the widow of Richard Baylis.

Sir Edward Smith was succeeded in his baronetcy by his son, Edward. This means his son inherited his title.
