Sir Erasmus Philipps, 3rd Baronet facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Erasmus Philipps, 3rd Baronet (born around 1623, died 18 January 1697), was an important Welsh politician. He served in the House of Commons, which is like a part of the government, in 1654 and again in 1659. A "Baronet" is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family.

Early Life and Family

Sir Erasmus Philipps was the oldest son of Sir Richard Philipps, 2nd Baronet. His family lived at a place called Picton Castle. When his father passed away, Erasmus became the 3rd Baronet, taking over the family title before 1654.

Sir Erasmus Philipps was married two times. His first wife was Lady Cecily Finch. Later, he married Catherine Darcy. His son, John, took over the Baronet title after him. John also became a Member of Parliament, just like his father.

A Career in Politics

Sir Erasmus Philipps was very active in politics. In 1654, people in Pembrokeshire chose him to be their Member of Parliament. This means he represented them in the First Protectorate Parliament, which was the government at the time.

He also had other important jobs. In 1654, he became a Militia Commissioner for south Wales. This role meant he helped organize local defense forces. In 1655, he was made a Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Pembrokeshire. A J.P. helps keep law and order in the local area.

Sir Erasmus Philipps was also a commissioner for Pembrokeshire, Cardiganshire, and Carmarthenshire. He was elected as a Member of Parliament for Pembrokeshire again in 1659. This time, he served in the Third Protectorate Parliament.
