Sir Geoffrey Palmer, 3rd Baronet facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Geoffrey Palmer, 3rd Baronet (1655–1732) was an important landowner and politician in Britain. He lived at East Carlton Hall in Northamptonshire. He was a member of the Tory Party and served in the House of Commons, which is like a parliament, from 1708 to 1722.

Early Life and Family

Sir Geoffrey Palmer was born on 12 June 1655. He was the oldest son of Sir Lewis Palmer, 2nd Baronet and his wife Jane. His family lived at Carlton Park in Northamptonshire.

When he was young, Geoffrey went to Trinity College, Cambridge in 1672 to study. Later, on 2 February 1681, he married Elizabeth Grantham. She was from Goltho, Lincolnshire, and Rievaulx Abbey, Yorkshire.

Political Journey

Around 1704, Sir Geoffrey became a Gentleman of the Privy Chamber. This was a special role where he helped the royal family. He held this job until 1714.

First Attempts at Parliament

In 1707, he tried to become a Member of Parliament (MP) for Leicestershire in a special election called a by-election. He didn't win that time.

However, a year later, in the general election of 1708, he tried again. This time, he won the most votes for Leicestershire and became an MP!

Life as an MP

Sir Geoffrey wasn't a very active MP, meaning he didn't speak much in Parliament. But he did vote on important issues. For example, in 1710, he voted against the idea of formally accusing Dr. Sacheverell of wrongdoing. This process is called impeachment.

He was re-elected as an MP for Leicestershire in the 1710 general election. People saw him as a "Tory patriot" because he supported peace in 1711. He was also called a "worthy patriot" for helping to show problems with the government that came before.

Financial Challenges and Return

Sir Geoffrey did not run for election in 1713. This was probably because he was having money problems.

But things changed for him in April 1713. He inherited all the land and the special title of Baronet from his father. This helped his financial situation a lot. Because of this, he was able to run for MP again. He won a by-election for Leicestershire on 5 August 1714.

End of His Political Career

In the 1715 general election, the election for Leicestershire was held twice because of issues. These elections were very expensive. Because of the high costs, Sir Geoffrey decided not to run again in the 1722 general election.

Later Life and Legacy

Sir Geoffrey Palmer passed away on 29 December 1732. He did not have any children. After he died, his nephew, Thomas Palmer, inherited his title and lands.
