Sir George-Étienne Cartier Square (officially called French: square Sir-George-Étienne-Cartier in French) is a lovely town square in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. You can find it in the Saint-Henri neighborhood, which is part of the Southwest area of the city.
This square is a small, rectangular park. It has a beautiful fountain right in the middle. In the northern part, you'll find some trees, and in the southern part, there's a pool. The square is surrounded by charming rowhouses.
Discovering Sir George-Étienne Cartier Square
This special square is named after a famous politician, George-Étienne Cartier. He was an important figure in Canadian history. The square was built in 1912. Before it became a park, it was just an old site in the west end of the city.
How the Square Was Created
In 1905, the neighborhood of Saint-Henri became part of the big city of Montreal. At that time, the Mayor of Montreal, Hormidas Laporte, made a promise during his election campaign. He promised to build this square for the community.
When the square was being developed, special rules were made for the houses around it. These rules said that the houses had to be built with stone fronts and decorative bricks. This helped make the area look very nice and uniform.
The Beautiful Fountain
The fountain in the center of Sir George-Étienne Cartier Square is a real highlight. It was first put in place when the square opened in 1912. The different parts of this fountain were ordered from a company called J. L. Mott Iron Works in New York City.
The fountain was carefully restored in 2003. This means it was fixed up to look as good as new, so everyone can continue to enjoy its beauty today.
