Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir George Jackson, 1st Baronet (born 1770, died 1846) was an important figure in Irish politics. He was an Anglo-Irish politician, meaning he had British and Irish heritage and was involved in the government of Ireland during his time.

Sir George Jackson: A Political Journey

Sir George Jackson spent many years working as a politician. This means he was involved in making decisions and laws for the country.

What is a Member of Parliament?

A Member of Parliament (often called an MP) is a person chosen by people in a certain area to represent them in the government. They speak for the people in their area and help create laws.

The Irish House of Commons

Back in Sir George Jackson's time, Ireland had its own parliament called the Irish House of Commons. This was a place where MPs from different parts of Ireland would meet to discuss and make laws for the country.

Representing the People

Sir George Jackson was an MP for two different areas, also known as constituencies:

  • He represented Coleraine from 1789 to 1796.
  • After that, he represented Randalstown starting in 1797.

The Acts of Union 1800

Sir George Jackson's time as an MP for Randalstown came to an end because of something called the Acts of Union 1800. These were laws that joined the Kingdom of Ireland with the Kingdom of Great Britain. This meant that Ireland's own parliament, including the Irish House of Commons, was closed down. Irish MPs then went to the British Parliament in London instead.

Becoming a Baronet

On 21 April 1813, Sir George Jackson received a special title. He was made a baronet of Fort Hill. A baronet is a hereditary title, which means it can be passed down through the family, similar to a knight but with a higher rank. However, when Sir George Jackson passed away in 1846, his title as a baronet ended because he did not have an heir to pass it on to.
