Sir George Robinson, 5th Baronet facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir George Robinson, 5th Baronet (born 1730, died 1815) was an important British landowner and politician. He served in the House of Commons, which is a part of the British Parliament, from 1774 to 1780.

Early Life and Family

Sir George Robinson was born in 1730 and was baptized on May 27. His father was Sir John Robinson, 4th Baronet of Cranford. His mother was Mary Morgan.

George went to Oakham School and then studied at Trinity College, Cambridge starting in 1749. In 1755, he became a fellow at the college.

He married Dorothea Chester on December 2, 1764. In 1766 and 1767, he held an important local position called High Sheriff of Northamptonshire. This role meant he was a chief law enforcement officer in his county.

On August 31, 1766, George became the 5th Baronet after his father passed away. A baronet is a special title that is passed down through families, similar to a knight but hereditary.

Time in Parliament

Sir George Robinson inherited land and property in Northamptonshire. In the 1774 British general election, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for the area of Northampton. A Member of Parliament is a person elected to represent their local area and help make laws for the country.

He was elected because of his own standing and influence in the area. Records show that he did not speak much in the House of Commons during his time there. He did not try to be elected again in 1780.

People described him as an "honest, independent country gentleman." This meant he was a fair and trustworthy person who owned land in the countryside. He held "Whig principles," which was a political viewpoint at the time, and was "inclined to Opposition." This means he often disagreed with the ruling government.

Later Life and Legacy

Sir George Robinson passed away on October 10, 1815. His son, also named George, took over the baronetcy after him.
