Gilbert Hoghton was the son of Sir Richard Hoghton, 1st Baronet. Their family home was Hoghton Tower in Lancashire. Gilbert became a courtier, meaning he spent time at the King's court. He was a favorite of King James I. The King made him a knight at Whitehall on July 21, 1604.

Life as a Politician and Leader

In 1614, Gilbert Hoghton was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Clitheroe. This meant he represented that area in the government. Later, in 1621, he was elected to represent the larger area of Lancashire. He served until 1622 and was re-elected for Lancashire in 1626.

In 1630, when his father passed away, Gilbert inherited the title of Baronet. This was a special title passed down in the family.

Role in the English Civil War

In April 1640, Hoghton was again elected as a Member of Parliament for Lancashire. In 1643, he became the High Sheriff of Lancashire, a very important local official.

During the English Civil War, Sir Gilbert was a strong leader for the Royalists in Lancashire. The Royalists supported King Charles I against the Parliament. Sir Gilbert was one of the first to act in the Blackburn Hundred area. In February 1643, he was present when the Royalists lost Preston to the Parliament's forces. He later served at the Siege of Chester.

His family home, Hoghton Tower, was used as a base for the Royalist army. Sadly, part of the tower was accidentally blown up by Parliamentary forces, and some of their soldiers were killed. After this, the Hoghton estate was taken over by the Parliament.

Sir Gilbert Hoghton passed away in April 1648 and was buried in Preston.
