Sir Richard Hoghton (born around 1616, died 1678) was an important English politician. He was a member of the English Parliament many times between 1640 and 1656. He strongly supported the Parliament's side, known as the Roundheads, during the English Civil War.

His Life and Role in Parliament

Richard Hoghton was the oldest son of Sir Gilbert Hoghton, who was also a well-known figure.

In 1645, Richard was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Lancashire. This was during a time called the Long Parliament. Unlike his father, who supported the King, Richard was a strong supporter of Parliament. He also believed strongly in the Presbyterian religion.

In April 1647, he inherited his father's title, becoming the 3rd Baronet of De Hoghton. In 1656, he was again elected as a Member of Parliament for Lancashire. This time, it was for the Second Protectorate Parliament.

In 1659, he was given the important job of Sheriff of Lancashire. This role involved keeping law and order in the county. After the King returned to power, Sir Richard Hoghton continued to support religious leaders who did not follow the official church.

His Family

Sir Richard Hoghton married Lady Sarah, who was the daughter of Philip Stanhope, the first Earl of Chesterfield. They had several children, both sons and daughters. Two of their sons grew up to be adults:

  • Charles, who took over his father's title. Charles was also the great-great-great-grandfather of the famous author and mathematician Lewis Carroll, who wrote "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland."
  • Benjamin, who never married.
