Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Hans Hamilton, 1st Baronet (who died in 1682), was an important politician from Ireland with English family roots. He lived a long time ago, in the 1600s.

Who Was Sir Hans Hamilton?

Sir Hans Hamilton was a notable figure in Irish politics during the 17th century. He held several important positions and was given special titles for his service. He is known for his work in the Irish Parliament and as a trusted advisor.

His Political Career

From 1661 to 1666, Sir Hans Hamilton served as a Member of Parliament for County Armagh. This meant he was a representative for the people of County Armagh in the Irish House of Commons, which was like the parliament of Ireland at that time.

In 1673, he became a member of the Privy Council of Ireland. This was a special group of advisors to the King in Ireland, helping to make important decisions for the country. He was also the Custos Rotulorum of County Armagh, which was a very important official role. It meant he was in charge of keeping official records and maintaining peace in County Armagh.

Becoming a Baronet

Sir Hans Hamilton received special honors during his life. In 1661, he was knighted, which meant he was given the title "Sir." A year later, on April 6, 1662, he was given an even higher honor. He was made a baronet, of Monilla, in what was called the Baronetage of Ireland. A baronet is a special hereditary title, a bit like a knight, but it could sometimes be passed down through the family. However, when Sir Hans Hamilton died, his baronet title did not pass on to anyone else, so it ended with him.

Family Life

Sir Hans Hamilton was married to Magdalene, who was the daughter of Sir Edward Trevor. They had one daughter named Sarah. Sarah later married a man also named Sir Robert Hamilton, 1st Baronet. Sir Hans Hamilton was also related to another important person: he was the nephew of James Hamilton, 1st Viscount Claneboye.
