Sir Henry Bunbury, 3rd Baronet facts for kids
Sir Henry Bunbury, 3rd Baronet (born 29 November 1676 – died 12 February 1733) was an important British politician from Cheshire. He was a member of the Tory party and served in the British Parliament for 27 years, from 1700 to 1727. When the new royal family, the Hanovers, came to power in 1714, he first supported them. However, he later showed support for the Jacobites, who wanted to bring back the old royal family.
Early Life and Family
Henry Bunbury was the son of Sir Henry Bunbury, 2nd Baronet, and his mother was Mary Eyton. When he was only eleven years old in 1687, he became a baronet after his father passed away. A baronet is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family.
Henry went to St Catharine's College, Cambridge for his education. In 1699, he married Susannah Hanmer. They had a large family with four sons and five daughters.
What Did He Do in Politics?
Sir Henry Bunbury held several important roles. In 1699, he was the High Sheriff of Cheshire, which was a local government position.
He was first elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Chester in 1701. He won elections again in 1702, 1705, 1708, and 1710 without anyone running against him. This shows he was quite popular in his area.
In 1711, he was given a job as a Commissioner of the Revenue for Ireland. This meant he helped manage taxes and money for the government in Ireland. He was re-elected as an MP in 1713 and again in 1715.
However, in 1715, things changed for him. He was found with writings that went against the government at the time and was talking with groups who wanted a different king. Because of this, he lost his job in Ireland in September 1715.
He was elected as an MP again in 1722 but lost his seat in the election of 1727.
His Later Years and Family
Sir Henry Bunbury passed away in 1733. He was buried in Stoke, Chester. After his death, his sons, Charles and then William, became the next baronets. His daughter, Isabella, married a general named John Lee. Their son, also named Charles Lee, became a famous general in America.
