Early Life and Learning
Henry was born in 1710. He was one of the younger sons in his family. He probably went to Eton College, a famous school in England. After school, he started studying law at Lincoln's Inn in 1728. This was a place where people learned to become lawyers.
A Career in the Army
Even though he studied law, Henry decided to join the Army instead. He became a soldier and worked his way up through the ranks. By 1765, he had reached a very high position: Lieutenant-General. This shows he was a skilled and dedicated military leader.
Becoming a Member of Parliament
A big change happened in Henry's life in 1747. His older brother, Charles, was sadly killed in a battle called the Battle of Lauffeld. Because of this, Henry became the 5th Baronet and inherited his family's estate.
After this, he also became involved in politics. He was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for two different areas in Scotland. First, he represented Ayr Burghs from 1749 to 1754. Then, he represented Anstruther Easter Burghs from 1754 until he passed away in 1765. As an MP, he helped make decisions for the country.
