Sir Henry Felton, 2nd Baronet facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Henry Felton, 2nd Baronet (born July 27, 1619 – died October 20, 1690) was an important English politician. He served as a Member of Parliament in the House of Commons for many years, from 1656 to 1679. A Baronet is a special title, similar to a knight, that can be passed down in a family.

Early Life and Family Background

Sir Henry Felton was born into an important family. His father was Sir Henry Felton, 1st Baronet, who lived in a place called Playford, Suffolk. His mother was Dorothy Gawdy.

When Sir Henry was very young, only about five years old, his father passed away in 1624. This meant that young Henry inherited the title of Baronet from his father.

Because he was so young when his father died, Sir Henry became a "ward" of the Court of Wards. This was a special court that looked after young people who inherited land and titles before they were old enough to manage them themselves. His grandmother, Elizabeth, helped to make sure he was looked after properly.

A Career in Politics

Sir Henry Felton became a Member of Parliament (MP), which means he was chosen to represent the people of Suffolk in the government.

He was first elected as an MP in 1656. He served in a government assembly known as the Second Protectorate Parliament. He was elected again in 1659 for the Third Protectorate Parliament.

After some changes in the government, Sir Henry was elected once more in 1660 to the Convention Parliament. He continued to be an MP, being re-elected in 1661 for the Cavalier Parliament. He held this important position until 1679.

Sir Henry Felton lived to be 71 years old. He passed away on October 20, 1690.

His Family

Sir Henry Felton married Susannah Tollemache. Her father was Sir Lionel Tollemache, 2nd Baronet.

Sir Henry and Susannah had a large family. They had five sons, and three of their sons later inherited the Baronet title. They also had three daughters.
