Sir Lionel Tollemache, 2nd Baronet (born August 2, 1591 – died September 6, 1640), was an important person from Helmingham Hall in Suffolk, England. He was a Baronet, which is a special title passed down through families. He also served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Orford in Suffolk. This meant he helped make laws and decisions for the country.

Who Was Sir Lionel Tollemache?

Sir Lionel Tollemache was born on August 2, 1591. His father was Sir Lionel Tollemache, 1st Baronet. His mother was Katharine Cromwell. She was the daughter of Henry Cromwell, 2nd Baron Cromwell. The Tollemache family was well-known in Suffolk.

His Work as a Member of Parliament

Sir Lionel Tollemache became a knight on November 15, 1612. This was a special honor given by the King. When his father passed away in 1612, Lionel became the 2nd Baronet. He also took over the family estate at Helmingham.

In 1621, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Orford. This meant he represented the people of Orford in the English Parliament. He also advised King James I and later King Charles I as a Privy Councillor.

He was elected as an MP for Orford again in 1628. He served until 1629. At that time, King Charles I decided to rule without Parliament for eleven years. This period was called the Personal Rule.

On December 16, 1612, Sir Lionel Tollemache married Elizabeth Stanhope. She was the daughter of John Stanhope, 1st Baron Stanhope. They had one son and several daughters.

  • Their son, Sir Lionel Tollemache, 3rd Baronet (1624–1669), inherited his father's title.
  • Their daughter Jane Tollemache married Thomas Cholmondeley.
  • Another daughter, Elizabeth Tollemache, married William Alington, 1st Baron Alington. She later married Sir William Compton.
  • Their daughter Anne Tollemache married Sir Robert Broke.

His Passing

Sir Lionel Tollemache passed away suddenly on September 6, 1640. He was 49 years old. He was buried at St Mary's Church in Helmingham. There is a special monument there that honors him. His father had started building it, and Sir Lionel finished it.
