Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Hugh Dillon Massy, 2nd Baronet (born November 9, 1767 – died March 28, 1842) was an Anglo-Irish politician. He also held the title of a baronet, which is a special inherited title.

Sir Hugh Dillon Massy was the son of Sir Hugh Massy, 1st Baronet and Elizabeth Stacpoole. He followed in his father's footsteps in public service.

Becoming a Politician

In 1797, Sir Hugh Dillon Massy was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is a person elected to represent a group of people in a country's government. He represented County Clare in the Irish House of Commons. This was like the parliament for Ireland at that time.

He served there until 1800. That year, the Acts of Union 1800 were passed. These laws joined the Kingdom of Ireland with the Kingdom of Great Britain. This created the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Because of this, the Irish House of Commons was closed.

Serving in the UK Parliament

After the union, Sir Hugh Dillon Massy continued his political career. In 1801, he was elected again as an MP for Clare. This time, he served in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. This is the main law-making body for the entire United Kingdom.

However, he did not keep his seat for long. He lost his position in the 1802 United Kingdom general election. A general election is when people vote to choose their representatives in parliament.

A Baronet's Title

On April 29, 1807, Sir Hugh Dillon Massy received a special title. He became the 2nd Baronet, taking over from his father. A baronet is a hereditary title, meaning it is passed down through the family. It is a rank below a baron but above a knight.

Family Life

Sir Hugh Dillon Massy married Sarah Hankey on May 14, 1796. Sarah was the daughter of Thomas Hankey and Mary Wyver.
