Who Was Sir James Abercrombie?

James Abercrombie was the son of James Hamilton, 4th Duke of Hamilton. He started his military career in 1696. He became an ensign in the Royal Scots regiment.

Early Military Career

Abercrombie fought in the famous Battle of Blenheim in 1704. He served as an aide to George Douglas-Hamilton, 1st Earl of Orkney. An aide helps a senior officer. In 1706, he was promoted to major. He became a captain in 1707.

Becoming a Baronet

On May 21, 1709, James Abercrombie was given the title of Baronet. This is a special honor from the King. It means he could use "Sir" before his name. After this, he joined the Coldstream Guards. He served as a captain and lieutenant-colonel there from 1710 to 1711.

Serving in Parliament

In 1710, James Abercrombie became a Member of Parliament (MP). He represented the area of Dysart Burghs. He won his seat without anyone running against him. He served in Parliament until September 1710. He decided not to run for re-election.

Life After Parliament

After leaving Parliament, Abercrombie continued his military career. He became a lieutenant-colonel in 1711. Later that year, he was promoted to brevet colonel.
