Sir James Halyburton facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir James Halyburton, also known as Haliburton, was an important person in Scotland many years ago. He was a landowner, meaning he owned a lot of property and land. He was also a politician, which means he helped make decisions about how the country was governed. He lived in a place called Pitcur.

Life and Times

Sir James Halyburton was the son of Sir George Halyburton of Pitcur. He was also a great-nephew of James Halyburton, who was a well-known reformer. In 1586, his father gave some land, called Thorngreen, to James and his future wife, Margaret. Margaret was the daughter of James Scrimgeour of Dudhope.

In 1617, Sir James, as the owner of Pitcur, became a representative for the area of Forfarshire. He represented the local landowners, often called 'barons', in two important groups: the Convention of Estates and the Parliament of Scotland. These groups were like the government meetings of their time, where important decisions for the country were made.
