Who Was John Carnegie?
John Carnegie was born before 1611. His parents were David Carnegie and Eupheme Wemyss. He was the younger brother of David Carnegie, who became the 1st Earl of Southesk. John lived at a place called Inglismaldie Castle.
Supporting the King
During the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, John Carnegie strongly supported the King. These wars were a series of big conflicts across England, Scotland, and Ireland. They were fought between those who supported the King and those who supported Parliament.
John Carnegie was first given the titles of Earl of Ethie and Lord Lour in 1647. However, he later gave up these titles. In 1662, he received new ones instead. He became the 1st Earl of Northesk and Lord Lour.
Facing Challenges
Because he supported the King, John Carnegie faced some difficulties. After Oliver Cromwell's side won the wars, John had to pay a large fine. This fine was £6,000, which was a huge amount of money back then. This happened under a rule called Cromwell's Act of Grace.
His Later Years
John Carnegie passed away on January 8, 1667. He left behind a legacy as a loyal supporter of the Royalist cause.
John Carnegie's Family
John Carnegie was married two times. His first wife was Magdalen Haliburton. She was the daughter of Sir James Haliburton. They were married around 1580 and Magdalen passed away in 1650.
His second wife was Margery Maule. She was the daughter of Andrew Maule. John and Margery got married on April 29, 1652.
With his first wife, Magdalen, John Carnegie had six children:
