James had a younger brother, Charles Ritchie, 1st Baron Ritchie of Dundee, who also became a very important person later in life.

James Ritchie followed in his father's footsteps and became a partner in the family business. The company had offices in both London and Dundee.

As he grew older, James became very involved in the public life of London.

Becoming Lord Mayor

In 1903, Sir James Thomson Ritchie was chosen for a very special role: the Lord Mayor of London. This is one of the oldest and most respected positions in London, acting as the head of the City of London Corporation. He served as Lord Mayor from 1903 to 1904.

While he was Lord Mayor, he was also given the title of baronet on December 15, 1903. This title meant he was known as Sir James Thomson Ritchie, 1st Baronet, of Highlands, Shanklin, on the Isle of Wight.

Family Life and Legacy

In 1858, James Ritchie married Lydia Rebecca Lemon. They had a large family with two sons and seven daughters.

Sir James Thomson Ritchie passed away in Shanklin on September 18, 1912. After his death, his baronetcy (the special title) ended for a short time. However, his eldest son, James William Ritchie, was later given his own baronetcy in 1918. This helped to make sure the family's special title continued.
