Early Life and Family

John Aubrey was the son of Sir John Aubrey, 2nd Baronet. His mother was Margaret Lowther. Her father was Sir John Lowther, 1st Baronet. In 1700, John Aubrey became the 3rd Baronet after his father passed away. A baronet is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family.

He went to Jesus College, Oxford, a famous university, in 1698 when he was 17 years old. In 1701, he married Mary Steally at St James's Church, Piccadilly in London.

His Time in Politics

Aubrey became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Cardiff in 1706. An MP is someone elected to represent their area in the country's main law-making body. He was chosen again in the 1708 general election. A general election is when people vote for their representatives.

He was part of the Whig party. The Whigs were one of the two main political groups in Britain at that time. They often supported more power for Parliament and less for the king. In 1709, he voted to allow certain groups of people from Europe to become British citizens. He often voted with the Whigs and against the Tories, who were the other main political party. In 1710, he voted to remove a public figure from office. He was not chosen to run for Parliament again in the 1710 election. Later in 1710, he was given the job of High Sheriff of Glamorgan. A High Sheriff was a royal official responsible for law and order in a county.
