Sir John Carmichael-Anstruther, 5th and 2nd Baronet (born 1 June 1785 – died 28 January 1818), was an important British politician. He served as a Member of Parliament, often called an MP, for the Anstruther-Easter Burghs. He held this position from 1811 until 1818.

A Baronet is a special title in the United Kingdom. It is passed down through families, similar to a knight, but it is a hereditary title. This means it stays in the family for generations.

Early Life and Education

Sir John Carmichael-Anstruther was the oldest son of Sir John Anstruther. His father was also a Baronet. He was born in 1785.

He received a good education. He studied at Eton, a famous school in England. After Eton, he went to Christ Church, Oxford, which is part of Oxford University. In 1806, he began studying law at Lincoln's Inn. This is a place where people train to become barristers, a type of lawyer.

Family and Titles

When his father passed away in 1811, John became the 5th and 2nd Baronet Anstruther. This meant he took on the family title.

Later, in 1817, he inherited more family lands. These lands were called Carmichael and Westraw. They were in a place called Lanarkshire. He inherited them from his cousin. After this, he added "Carmichael" to his name. This is why he became known as Sir John Carmichael-Anstruther.

Political Career

Sir John Carmichael-Anstruther served as a Member of Parliament. MPs are elected by people to represent them in the country's government. He represented the Anstruther-Easter Burghs. These were a group of towns in Scotland. He worked as an MP for seven years, from 1811 to 1818.

Marriage and Family

In 1817, Sir John Carmichael-Anstruther got married. His wife was Jessie Dewar. She was the daughter of a military leader.

Sir John and Jessie had one son, also named John. Sadly, Sir John Carmichael-Anstruther passed away in 1818. His son was born just nine days after his death.
