Sir John Coghill, 1st Baronet (born John Cramer on 14 July 1732 – died 8 March 1790) was an important figure in Irish politics. He was known as John Cramer for most of his life until 1775. He became a Baronet, which is a special title of honor passed down through families.

His Early Life and Family

John Cramer was born into the Cramer family. His parents were Balthazar John Cramer and Judith Butler. His grandfather, Oliver Cramer, was related to a very important person named Marmaduke Coghill. Marmaduke Coghill was the Chancellor of the Exchequer of Ireland, which is like the country's chief money manager.

Becoming Sir John Coghill

A big change happened in John Cramer's life in 1775. His cousin, Hester Coghill, passed away. She was the last person in her branch of the Coghill family. Because of this, John Cramer inherited the large Coghill family estates and lands. To mark this important event, he officially changed his last name from Cramer to Coghill. He did this with a special permission called a Royal licence.

In 1778, John Coghill received another great honor. He was made a baronet. A baronet is a hereditary title, meaning it can be passed down from father to son. This title is just below a baron but above a knight. He became the "1st Baronet of Coghill" in the Baronetage of Great Britain. After he passed away, his eldest son, also named John, became the 2nd Baronet.

His Political Career

Sir John Coghill was active in politics for many years. He served as a member of the Irish House of Commons. This was like the parliament or main law-making body for Ireland at the time.

He represented the area of Belturbet in the Irish House of Commons. He was first elected to this role in 1755 and served until 1760. He was then re-elected and continued to represent Belturbet from 1761 until 1776. During his time in the House of Commons, he helped make decisions and laws for Ireland.
