Sir John Conway, 2nd Baronet facts for kids
Sir John Conway, 2nd Baronet (born around 1662, died 1721) was an important person from Bodrhyddan Hall in Rhuddlan, Wales. He owned a lot of land and was a politician who belonged to the Tory party. He served in the House of Commons, which is a part of the British government, for many years between 1685 and 1721.
Early Life and Family
John Conway was the oldest son of Sir Henry Conway, 1st Baronet and his wife, Mary Lloyd. When his father passed away in 1669, John became the 2nd Baronet. A baronet is a special title, like a knight, but it can be passed down through the family.
John went to school at Eton College, a famous school, in 1678. Then, when he was 16, he went to Christ Church, Oxford, a well-known university, in 1679.
A Career in Politics
John Conway started his public life in 1679 when he became a "freeman" of Denbigh. This was a special status in the town.
In 1685, he was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Flintshire. An MP is someone elected to represent their area in the House of Commons, where laws are made. He did not run for election in 1687 because he was chosen to be the High Sheriff of Flintshire in 1688. The High Sheriff was an important local official. He also worked as a deputy lieutenant from 1689 to about 1696. From 1689 to 1690, he helped with taxes as a commissioner for assessment in Denbighshire and Flintshire.
By 1691, John Conway was a Justice of the Peace. This meant he was a local judge who helped keep order and fairness. After a short break, he continued this role from 1700 until he died.
The MP seat for Flintshire often rotated among local families. In 1695, it was John Conway's turn again, and he was elected as MP for Flintshire. He was elected again in 1698 and in the first election of 1701.
In 1702, he was elected as MP for Flint Boroughs. He voted on important issues in parliament. He was elected for Flintshire again in 1705. In 1708, he was elected as a Tory MP for Flint Boroughs. He was elected again in 1710 and was known as a "Tory patriot" because he supported peace. He also helped to fix problems from the previous government.
John Conway was elected for Flintshire again in 1713. His last election was in 1715 for Flint Boroughs. He held this seat until he passed away, but he did not speak much in parliament during his last years.
Family Life
Sir John Conway passed away in Bath on April 27, 1721, when he was 58 years old. He was buried in Rhuddlan.
He was married two times. His first wife was Margaretta Maria Digby. She died in 1690. In 1701, he married his second wife, Penelope Grenville.
John Conway had two daughters from each of his marriages. Sadly, his son died, which meant that the baronetcy title could not be passed on and ended with him. His home, Bodrhyddan Hall, went to his daughter Penelope, who married James Russell Stapleton.
