Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir John Eden, 2nd Baronet (1677–1728) was an important British politician. He served in the House of Commons, which is like a main part of the British Parliament, from 1713 to 1727. A "Baronet" is a special title, like a hereditary knight, passed down in a family.

Early Life and Family Connections

Sir John Eden was born in 1677 and was the oldest son of Sir Robert Eden, 1st Baronet, of West Auckland. His mother was Margaret Lambton. He was baptized on September 11, 1677.

Education and Marriage

John Eden went to Queen's College, Oxford, a famous university, starting in 1695. Later, on January 31, 1715, he married Catherine Shafto. As a wedding gift, he received Windlestone Hall, a large and beautiful estate.

Political Career and Public Service

Sir John Eden followed in his father's footsteps in politics. He became a Member of Parliament (MP) for County Durham. An MP is someone elected to represent an area in the House of Commons.

First Elections and Local Role

In the 1713 general election, Sir John was elected without anyone running against him. This means he was "unopposed." He also served as the Mayor of Hartlepool, a town in England, from 1714 to 1715. He was elected unopposed again in the 1715 general election.

Becoming a Baronet and Later Elections

When his father passed away on March 30, 1721, John inherited the title and became the 2nd Baronet. In the 1722 general election, he won his seat in Durham again, even though there was a competition. He won because his opponents had disagreements among themselves. He was also Mayor of Hartlepool for a second time from 1722 to 1723.

End of His Time in Parliament

In the 1727 election, Sir John Eden decided not to run for Parliament. This was because his political opponents had settled their differences and were working together.

Later Life and Legacy

Sir John Eden passed away in Bath on May 2, 1728. His only son, Robert, took over the baronetcy after him.
