Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir John Hamilton-Dalrymple (born December 2, 1780 – died May 26, 1835) was an important Scottish politician and soldier. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Haddington Burghs from 1805 to 1806. He came from a well-known family, being the second son of Sir Hew Dalrymple, 3rd Baronet, and the younger brother of Sir Hew Dalrymple-Hamilton, 4th Baronet.

A Life in the Army

Sir John began his military career at a young age. In 1795, he joined the 28th Light Dragoons as a cornet, which was a junior officer rank. He quickly moved up the ranks. By 1797, he was a lieutenant, and in 1800, he became a captain.

When there was a short period of peace in 1802, he took a break from active duty. But when war with France started again, he returned to service. In 1803, he became a captain-commandant for the North Berwick Volunteers. Soon after, he joined the 73rd Regiment of Foot as a captain.

Rising Through the Ranks

Sir John continued to advance in his military career. In 1803, he moved to the 42nd Regiment of Foot as a captain. By 1805, he had become a major in the 64th Regiment of Foot. Later that same year, he was promoted to lieutenant-colonel in the 10th Regiment of Foot.

He also served with the 22nd Regiment of Foot in 1806. His hard work and dedication led to further promotions. In 1813, he became a brevet colonel, which is a temporary higher rank. By 1819, he reached the impressive rank of major-general. He even served for a time in Madras, a city in India.

Political Career and Family Life

Besides his military service, Sir John also had a brief career in politics. He was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Haddington Burghs. He held this position in the UK Parliament between 1805 and 1806.

On July 30, 1806, Sir John married Charlotte Warrender. She was the daughter of Sir Patrick Warrender. They had a large family together, including two sons and five daughters.

Inheriting a Title

Sir John inherited the title of Baronet on February 23, 1834. This happened after his brother, Sir Hew Dalrymple-Hamilton, passed away. A baronetcy is a special hereditary title, similar to a knight, that is passed down through the family. When Sir John passed away in 1835, his son, Hew, took over the baronetcy.
