Early Life and Name Change
Sir John Magill was born with the name John Johnston. His parents were William Johnston and Susanna Magill. For reasons we don't know, he decided to change his last name to Magill in the year 1677.
Becoming a Knight and Baronet
Sir John received two special honors during his life.
- On November 5, 1680, he was made a knight bachelor. This was a special honor given by an important person, in this case, James Butler, 1st Duke of Ormond. Being a knight meant he was recognized for his service or achievements.
- Just five days later, on November 10, 1680, he was given an even higher title: a baronet. This title was connected to his home, Gill Hall, and was part of the Baronetage of Ireland. A baronet is a bit like a knight, but the title can be passed down through the family.
His Time in Politics
Sir John Magill was a Member of Parliament (often called an MP). An MP is a person chosen by people to represent them and help make laws in the government.
- From 1692 to 1693, he represented the area of Hillsborough. He served in the Irish House of Commons, which was like the main meeting place for politicians in Ireland at that time.
- Later, from 1695 to 1699, he represented another area called Downpatrick.
Family and Legacy
Sir John Magill was married twice.
- His first wife was Elizabeth Mary Hawkins, whom he married on October 13, 1677.
- His second wife was Hon. Arabella Susanna Hamilton. She was the daughter of Hugh Hamilton, 1st Viscount of Glenawly.
Sadly, Sir John did not have any sons from either of his marriages. Because of this, when he passed away on January 18, 1700, his special title of Baronet could not be passed on to anyone else. The title ended with him.
