Sir John Maxwell was the oldest son of Sir James Maxwell, who was the 6th Baronet of Pollok. His mother was Frances Colquhoun. Sir John became the 7th Baronet when his father passed away in 1785.
He married Hannah (also known as Anne) Gardiner. Together, they had one son, who later became Sir John Maxwell, 8th Baronet. They also had two daughters: Harriet Maxwell, who passed away in 1812, and Elizabeth Maxwell. Elizabeth married Archibald Stirling, and they were the parents of Sir William Stirling-Maxwell, 9th Baronet, who also held the Pollok baronet title later on.
