Sir John Peachey, 2nd Baronet (born around 1680, died 1744), was an important British landowner from West Dean, Sussex. He was also a politician who served in the House of Commons from 1738 until his death in 1744. He belonged to the Tory political group.
Early Life and Family
John Peachey was the fourth son of William Peachey, a successful merchant from London. His family owned land in a place called Petworth.
In 1706, John Peachey married Henrietta London. Her father, George London, was a very important gardener for Queen Anne.
John Peachey also had a military career. By 1719, he was a captain in the 7th Foot, which was an army regiment.
He became the 2nd Baronet when his older brother, Sir Henry Peachey, 1st Baronet, passed away on August 23, 1737. A baronet is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family.
Political Career
Sir John Peachey became a Member of Parliament (MP) for the area of Midhurst. He was elected in a special election on February 3, 1738, after his brother's death.
As an MP, he often voted with the "Opposition." This means he voted against the government's main policies at the time.
In 1741, there was a big election for all of Britain. The Tories, his political party, asked him to run for a larger area called Sussex. However, he decided to stay and run again for Midhurst, where he was successfully re-elected.
His voting record shows he continued to support the Opposition. For example, he voted with them on December 16, 1741, regarding who should lead the elections committee.
