Sir John Philipps, 1st Baronet (died 27 March 1629) was an important Welsh landowner and politician. He was a member of the English Parliament in 1601.

John Philipps was the son of Morgan Philipps and Elizabeth Fletcher. His family lived at Picton Castle. In 1585, he inherited the Picton Castle estate. He also worked for the church in Bangor. John Philipps spent much of his life dealing with disagreements about land. In 1597, he became the High Sheriff of Pembrokeshire. This was a very important local official role.

Sir John Philipps's Political Life

In 1601, John Philipps was elected as a Member of Parliament for Pembrokeshire. This meant he represented the area in the government. On April 13, 1603, he was appointed as a J.P.. This was a local official who helped keep the peace.

In 1611, he was again the High Sheriff of Pembrokeshire. He was given a special title called a baronet on November 9, 1621. From 1622 to 1623, he was the High Sheriff of Carmarthenshire. Sir John Philipps died in 1629 and was buried in Slebech.

Family Life

Sir John Philipps married twice. His first wife was Anne Perrot. She was the daughter of Sir John Perrot. His second wife was Margaret Dennys. She was the daughter of Sir Thomas Dennys.

Sir John Philipps's son, Richard, inherited his baronet title. His daughter Dorothy married Francis Annesley, 1st Viscount Valentia. Dorothy was the mother of Arthur, 1st Earl of Anglesey.
