Sir John Skeffington, 2nd Baronet (around 1590 – 19 November 1651) was an English landowner and a politician. He was chosen to be a member of the House of Commons in 1626. He had to pay a large fine because he supported the Royalist side during the English Civil War.

Sir John Skeffington's Early Life and Family

John Skeffington was the oldest son of Sir William Skeffington, who was the 1st Baronet of Fisherwicke in Staffordshire. His mother was Margaret Dering from Surrenden, near Lenham, Kent.

Education and Early Career

In the spring of 1603, John Skeffington started studying at Jesus College, Cambridge. He then joined the Middle Temple on October 30, 1604. This was a place where people learned to become lawyers. In August 1624, he was given the title of Knight.

Sir John's Role in Politics

In 1626, John Skeffington was elected as a Member of Parliament for Newcastle-under-Lyme. This meant he represented that area in the English government.

Becoming a Baronet

When his father passed away in 1635, John Skeffington inherited the title of Baronet. This made him the 2nd Baronet.

Supporting the Royalists in the Civil War

From 1637 to 1638, Skeffington served as the Sheriff of Staffordshire. During the English Civil War, he chose to support the Royalist side. Because of this, he was fined a large amount of money. In November 1650, the fine was £1,152, but it was later lowered to £961.

Who Succeeded Sir John?

After Sir John Skeffington, his son William briefly became the 3rd Baronet. However, William died soon after, on April 7, 1652. The baronetcy then passed to a cousin, John Skeffington, who became the 4th Baronet. This John was the son of Sir Richard Skeffington.

Marriage and Passing

Sir John Skeffington married Cicely Skeffington, who was from Skeffington, Leicestershire. They had at least one child together. Sir John died when he was about 60 years old. He was buried at Skeffington on November 20, 1651.
