Early Life and Family
John Thorold was born in 1664. His parents were Anthony Thorold and Grisel, who was the daughter of Sir John Wray, 2nd Baronet. John was also the grandson of Sir William Thorold, 1st Baronet.
A "Baronet" is a special title, like a knight, but it can be passed down through the family. John became the 4th Baronet in his family. He inherited this title after his two older brothers, William and Anthony, sadly passed away in 1685.
Education and Political Career
Sir John Thorold went to St John's College, Cambridge to study. After that, he attended Lincoln's Inn, which is a place where people study to become lawyers.
His political journey began when he was elected as a Member of Parliament for Grantham in 1697. He held this position until 1701. Later, he represented Lincolnshire in Parliament until 1708. He then returned to represent Grantham again from 1711 until 1715. Being a Member of Parliament meant he helped make laws and decisions for the country.
Later Life and Legacy
In 1701, Sir John Thorold married Margaret Waterer. She was the widow of Francis Coventry. Their wedding took place at the famous Westminster Abbey in London.
Sir John Thorold passed away on 14 January 1717. He did not have any children. He was buried in a place called Syston, Lincolnshire. After his death, his cousin William became the 5th Baronet. William was the son of John Thorold, who was the third son of the 1st Baronet.
